The novel's hero, Johnie Savage, is an adventurer in pursuit of a family heirloom from the kingdom of The Nederlands in the European Low Countries to the islands of Eko in the Gulf of Guinea. Through that single journey, a saga spanning three centuries and generations of a Dutch family and its early beer industries finally plays out in Lagos. The uniqueness of The Denkyira Chest is the use of creative license to draw the Dutch-Africa connection to the shores of Lagos using the opportunity to explore the narrative of a city whose shores, more than any other, witnessed the Middle Passage and the 'return passage'
